Back To The Playground

Back To The Playground

My little guy has been asking for a video game system every other day. I have an internal conflict going on because there is nothing  I want more than to spend an afternoon with him playing the newest release on PS4. The other side of the coin is I fear it will lead to every waking moment being spent on it. Springtime rains make it all worse. My mind is made up though, it is time to get back to the playground.

Lost Innocence

As a child growing up in a small town, our summers were about baseball, soccer, tag, red rover and jumping our bmx bikes when we got old enough. Now I am not naive enough to think that we can bring back the magical land of innocence with a blink of an eye. I understand the consequences of letting our children roam the streets unsupervised at that age. How though, in a few short decades did it all disappear?

Home Run

Baseball Swing

By putting in an extra hour of work a day, I am able to take an afternoon off a week. This is time I relish and I am thankful my employer allows me this freedom. I am looking forward to the day that my son knocks his first hit out of the infield and the look that he will have on his face! I enjoy the stories he tells about flowers that are starting to bloom as we take our walks through the neighborhood. An hope more than anything he will enjoy the same walks with his kids.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand that technology is an important part of our children’s education. Now more so than ever. I just wish they were able to be six years while they still can. Someday we will head out to the Best Buy and grab newest, coolest video game console and play it until our eyes bleed. But for now, I think we will just head back to the playground and toss the ball around.
